The Four Rules of Firearm Safety

These universal rules apply every time you handle a firearm. Memorize them. Follow them without exception.

1

Treat Every Firearm as if It's Loaded

Even if you believe a firearm is unloaded, handle it with the same respect and caution as a loaded one. Never assume.

2

Never Point at Anything You're Not Willing to Destroy

Always be aware of where your muzzle is pointed. Keep it in a safe direction at all times—away from people and property.

3

Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Ready to Shoot

Your finger should rest along the frame, outside the trigger guard, until you have made the decision to fire.

4

Know Your Target and What's Beyond It

Positively identify your target. Be aware of what is behind and around it. Bullets can penetrate and travel far beyond the target.

Secure Storage

Proper storage prevents unauthorized access, theft, and accidents. Washington State law imposes civil liability for failure to securely store firearms in certain circumstances.

Gun Safes

The gold standard for secure storage. Fire-rated safes protect against theft, fire, and unauthorized access.

  • Choose appropriate size for your collection
  • Look for UL-rated or RSC certification
  • Bolt to floor or wall when possible
  • Electronic or mechanical lock options

Lock Boxes & Cases

Portable security for individual firearms. Good for travel, nightstand access, or apartment dwellers.

  • Quick-access designs available
  • Cable anchor points for security
  • Biometric options for fast access
  • TSA-approved options for travel

Trigger & Cable Locks

Basic security devices that prevent the firearm from being fired. Often included free with new firearm purchases.

  • Trigger locks block trigger access
  • Cable locks run through action
  • Use in addition to, not instead of, safes
  • Free locks available through Project ChildSafe

Ammunition Storage

Store ammunition separately from firearms when practical. Keep in cool, dry conditions.

  • Locked container recommended
  • Away from heat sources
  • Protect from moisture
  • Keep away from children

Washington State Secure Storage Law

Under RCW 9.41.360, you may be held civilly liable if a prohibited person or minor gains access to your unsecured firearm and uses it to harm someone. Secure storage protects your family and community—and limits your liability.

Safe Handling Practices

Loading & Unloading

  • Always point in a safe direction
  • Remove magazine first
  • Lock slide/bolt open
  • Visually and physically inspect chamber
  • Never trust memory—always verify

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Always verify firearm is unloaded first
  • Remove all ammunition from the area
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines
  • Use proper solvents and lubricants
  • Work in well-ventilated area

At the Range

  • Know and follow range rules
  • Always wear eye and ear protection
  • Keep actions open when not shooting
  • Never handle firearms during cease-fire
  • Be aware of others around you

Carrying (CCW)

  • Use a proper holster that covers trigger
  • Know your state and local laws
  • Train regularly with your carry setup
  • Be aware of prohibited locations
  • Understand use-of-force laws

Background Check Compliance

Background checks are a critical safety measure that helps keep firearms out of the hands of prohibited persons.

Our Policy

  • 100% NICS compliance on all applicable transfers
  • No exceptions or shortcuts
  • We do not proceed on delayed responses until cleared or waiting period expires
  • We reserve the right to refuse any transfer if we suspect illegal activity

Washington Universal Background Checks

Washington State requires background checks for all firearm transfers, including private sales. This helps ensure every buyer is legally eligible to possess firearms.

Washington State Requirements

Voluntary Storage Programs

If you're going through a difficult time and want to temporarily store your firearms away from home, we can discuss options. There is no shame in taking precautions during a crisis.

Safe Storage During Difficult Times

  • Ask a trusted friend or family member to hold firearms temporarily
  • Use a storage facility or gun safe off-site
  • Install time-delay safes that prevent impulsive access
  • Remove ammunition and store separately

Reporting Theft or Loss

If your firearm is stolen or lost, report it immediately.

Steps to Take

  1. Contact local law enforcement immediately
  2. Provide serial number, make, model, and description
  3. Request a police report number
  4. Contact your insurance company
  5. Document everything

Keep records of your firearms, including serial numbers and photos. Store this information securely (not with the firearms).
